What is a hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through an area of weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall.

Most hernias occur in relation to the abdominal wall and the majority of abdominal wall hernias contain fat or bowel from inside the abdomen cavity.

What symptoms can hernias cause?

Pain
Loss of function
Strangulation of contents ie bowel damage
Unsightly appearance

Some hernias may cause no symptoms at all

Why choose a specialist surgeon?

Ideally, surgery should succeed the first time it is performed.

Surgery for any form of recurrent condition tends to be harder and less successful than when the first attempt was made.

Specialists tend to be referred rarer hernias and perform surgery on more complex hernias.

On average, specialists in a field will obtain more successful outcomes than those who perform the procedure less frequently.
